Children Among 10 Killed In Deadly Brazil School Shooting

A shooting at a school near Sao Paulo on Wednesday left 10 people dead, state military police said, before the two shooters turned their weapons on themselves.

Two gunmen have opened fire at a school in south-eastern Brazil, killing at least six students and two employees, officials say.

"My friend was stabbed in the shoulder and my other friend was shot", she said.

"Then a lot of kids started running out, all screaming", he said. "We thought it was the shooters coming to get us, but it was the police", she said.

Salles added the gunmen, who police said appeared to be between the ages of 20 and 25 years old, used at least one.38-calibre pistol, along with homemade bombs and a crossbow.

Before entering the Raul Brasil school in Suzano, a city on the eastern outskirts of metropolitan Sao Paulo, the assailants, former pupils aged 17 and 25, shot and killed the owner of a auto rental agency from which they had stolen a vehicle.

A man was injured in another shooting near the school earlier, but police said they were still investigating if both cases were connected.

The attackers were trying to force their way inside a room at the back of the school where many students were hiding when police arrived.

School shootings are rare in Brazil, although the country is one of the world's most violent, with more annual homicides than any other. He said authorities didn't believe the two were former students.

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who took office in January, has signed a decree making it easier for law-abiding citizens to own a gun, a key campaign promise, even though many restrictions remain in place.

While gun laws are considered strict in Brazil, it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon.
