Nintendo announces Nintendo Labo 'VR Kit'

Nintendo's Labo VR kits turn the Switch into a Google Cardboard with extras

Nintendo's Labo VR kits turn the Switch into a Google Cardboard with extras

This is indeed happening in an unexpected way next month with the Nintendo Labo VR Kit. This time, you'll have the option to buy the full kit right away, or buy a Starter Set for a smaller price, and add Expansion Sets as you see fit.

The VR kit will be available in North America on April 12.

The fourth Labo kit will be a kit themed around virtual reality, and launch on April 12. Fend off an alien invasion with the Toy-Con Blaster, visit a colourful in-game ocean and snap photos of the sea life with the Toy-Con Camera, and so much more.

Nintendo Labo: VR Kit - Starter Set + Blaster ($39.99): Set includes Switch software, plus all the components to build the Toy-Con VR Goggles and Toy-Con Blaster, as well as the Screen Holder and Safety Cap. But by pairing a seemingly less intensive VR experience with its cardboard DIY accessories, the company may have discovered a way to circumvent the hefty processing requirements associated with today's VR-capable machines.

The complete Labo: VR Kit will cost $79.99, and include six different "Toy-Con" projects: VR Goggles, Blaster, Camera, Bird, Wind Pedal and Elephant, all of which are made of cardboard. The new Toy-Con VR Goggles can be combined with the other Toy-Con creations, and used for real-world actions.

Nintendo Labo: VR Kit - Expansion Set 2**: Expansion Set 2 includes the Toy-Con Wind Pedal and Toy-Con Bird.

The VR Kit is created to be passed around and shared among a group of people, Nintendo said.

Nintendo's two Labo VR sets will be available in the U.S. from April 12, 2019, with releases in the United Kingdom and Australia expected to arrive around the same time. Both sets also include a safety cap and screen holder, for people who prefer to play the minigames in traditional 2D.

The new product is Nintendo's first move into VR in more than two decades, after the 1995 Virtual Boy flopped with consumers.

Now, of course, since this is a Labo-based set, it does just mean that Nintendo is developing software specifically around the cardboard kit; you're not suddenly going to playing Mario Kart 8 or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild if you pick up the cardboard kit.
