Quebec City mosque shooter sentenced to life with no parole for 40 years

Quebec mosque shooter sentenced to life AP, Quebec City A 29-year-old who shot dead six worshipers at a Quebec City mosque in the worst anti-Muslim attack in the West got life in prison Friday.

The judge told Bissonnette, wearing a blue blazer and white shirt, to leave the prisoners' box and stand in front of him as he read the ruling.

Six worshippers were killed: Mamadou Tanou Barry, 42; Abdelkrim Hassane, 41; Khaled Belkacemi, 60; Aboubaker Thabti, 44; Azzeddine Soufiane, 57; and Ibrahima Barry, 39.

In the end, the judge said Bissonnette will not be eligible for parole until he served 40 years of his sentence.

He walked into the mosque at the Islamic Cultural Centre during evening prayers on January 29, 2017 and opened fire.

The justice concluded that a sentence of 50 years or more would constitute cruel and unusual punishment.

"Charter challenges to the 2011 provisions had previously been denied on the basis that the judge was not forced to increase parole ineligibility for multiple murders, " he wrote in an email to The Canadian Press.

"You killed six of your compatriots whose only crime was to be different than yourself", Huot said in court.

In March, Bissonnette admitted to killing six people and also pleaded guilty to six counts of attempted murder, including one count for the 35 people who were present in the mosque at the time of the shooting but who were not injured.

The longest sentences to date in Canada is 75 years without parole, which has been handed down in five cases - all involving triple murders.

For relatives of the victims and Quebec City's wider Muslim community, the sentence could also bring some closure to a courtroom drama that has been both painful and cathartic.

The prosecution had recommended that his six life sentences be served consecutively, which would have meant 150 years before being eligible for parole. The sixth attempted murder charge related to others who were nearby in the mosque.

"We were astonished, we were very upset after this sentence", Derbali said.

The crime prompted an outpouring of horror and sympathy that reached across Canada and around the world, prompting a wider conversation on Islamophobia, intolerance, and the need for better understanding between communities.

Bissonnette's defence team had questioned the severity of such a sentence during the trial, saying it amounts to a death sentence. "I am not a terrorist, I am not an Islamophobe".

He told police investigators that he believed a terrorist attack was imminent and felt he "had to do something".

One of the man's victim who was paralyzed in the attack, Aymen Derbali, said that numerous survivors were not pleased with the judge's sentencing.
