The 59 year-old coach led the Sooners to a National Championship in 2000. The XFL is also utilizing a "Football Reimagined Committee", consisting of former NFL players and coaches like Doug Flute and Jim Caldwell, to help reshape the game.

The new version of the XFL, which will kick off in February 2020, will feature eight teams with 45-man active rosters, a 10-week regular season and two-week postseason.

The XFL is set to begin play in February 2020 with franchises in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa Bay and Washington D.C. No other head coaches have been announced.

After serving as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, University of Florida and Kansas State University, Stoops signed on as OU's head coach before the 1999 season.

Since his surprise retirement in June 2017, multiple college programs had reached out to Stoops and his agent to gauge his interest in jobs, and there wasn't any. I thought one of the best things I ever did in my career was getting my first staff together at OU.

Although he said he doesn't have a personal relationship with McMahon, Stoops acknowledged the successful executive and Luck are big reasons he accepted this opportunity to coach again. He said the late winter/early spring schedule will allow him to still enjoy "Football Time in Oklahoma". "It'll be fun. It's a different time of year".

Stoops was introduced in a news conference Thursday by Oliver Luck, commissioner of the XFL.
