But on Thursday, James selected Westbrook to his team.

LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo were named All-Star captains after securing the most fan votes in this year's balloting.

Anthony Davis, left, and LeBron James share a moment in a Pelicans-Lakers game in December.

The starter's for Wade's team, which was drafted by James: Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant, Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving, Toronto Raptors wing Kawhi Leonard, Houston Rockets guard James Harden and James.

Given that James had the first pick of that round, it was a foregone conclusion that he would select Wade, his close friend and former championship-winning Miami teammate.

"[There's] nothing I need to get in this league that I don't already have", James told reporters. But the Pelicans kept Davis as the trade deadline passed, so for now, their time as teammates will be limited to All-Star weekend and James pounced at the chance to grab him with the second pick of the reserve round.

"Everyone in the world knows who I'm going with and I'm going with Dirk", James said, before pausing to laugh at his joke.

Serving as a captain alongside Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James for this year's NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, Antetokounmpo filled out his 13-man roster for all to see with this year's draft being televised during TNT's pregame show staple, Inside The NBA. James and Curry were the captains a year ago, but the order of their picks were not revealed or aired.

Then, to spite James, Antetokounmpo picked Ben Simmons. "I'm going with my buddy, Dwyane Wade". LeBron proposed Russell Westbrook for his Klutch Sports cohort Ben Simmons, with the added humor that Russ and Joel Embiid will be teammates on the Greek Freak's team.

"I didn't have to lobby for it", Wade said.
