The bust, which was both the biggest-ever domestic drug seizure in the United States and the biggest shipment bound for Australia, also netted four people in Melbourne.

More than 1.7 tons of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin were discovered on January 11 concealed within a shipment of loud speakers on a ship at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport.

The drugs were hidden in metal boxes labelled as loudspeakers. The seizure included 3,810 pounds of methamphetamine, 55.9 pounds of cocaine and 11.5 pounds of heroin.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Victorian police officers have arrested six people in Victoria and New South Wales as part of the case.

"We continue to pay top dollar for drugs in this country and this is an absolute draw card for organised crime".

A joint taskforce of Australian Federal Police, Border Force and Victoria Police raided properties across Melbourne yesterday at Woodstock, Pakenham and Campbellfield.

"We have averted a tsunami of ice coming into Australia".

Police were alerted to the alleged drug syndicate's enormous planned import when a country policeman in regional Victoria pulled over a driver and found a small amount of drugs in the vehicle.

Three of those arrested appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

"They are one of the major and most powerful organised crime cartels now operating", Mr Hill said.

In Sydney, a 31-year-old Australian national was arrested at Hinchinbrook in the city's south-west. We now believe that Mexican cartels are actively targeting Australia'.

Search warrants were also carried out by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia where a significant quantity of suspected proceeds of crime were seized.

"By stopping this, we have ensured criminals will not profit from the enormous pain these drugs would have caused our community", AFP Assistant Commissioner Bruce Hill told reporters. He said sewage drug monitoring data showed Victoria state-which has a population of 6.3 million-was estimated to consume just over 2 tons of ice each year.

The previous record of seized methylamphetamine bound for Australia was 1.3 tonnes found in Western Australia in December 2017.
