Ocasio-Cortez Seeks More Co-Sponsors As the Introduction of Green New Deal Legislation Approaches

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is set to release her much-touted Green New Deal on Thursday - a package of far-reaching, big-government proposals like health care for all, federal job guarantees and a push to eliminate USA carbon emissions - but it's already receiving shade from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The Green New Deal is an outline of objectives to transition the U.S.to 100 percent renewable energy in roughly 10 years. 'The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it right?' she said, mocking the democratic socialist's effort.

The Green New Deal, which has so far been a campaign catchphrase about solving climate change and inequality in one fell swoop, just got real.

Her website "promotes off-shore drilling under Energy issues-the very thing she wants to eliminate with her "Green New Deal" that dropped today", tweeted the RSC. The idea, which she introduced alongside Sen. The Trump administration does not believe action on climate change is necessary and is focused on increasing production of oil, gas and coal on federal and private land.

The Green New Deal also aims to create an economic safety net for communities that will be affected by the impacts of climate change and the shift away from fossil fuel use, including through guarantees of healthcare, jobs, and jobs training. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) are teasing the ambitious deal and set to unveil it at a Thursday afternoon press conference.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wasn't quite as eager about the plan as the freshman representative.

In the past decade, she has already seen Democrats try and fail to pass a sweeping cap-and-trade climate law.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped eight Democrats to serve on a special committee to address climate change. "Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Julia Brownley of California, Sean Casten of Illinois, Jared Huffman of California, Mike Levin of California, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Joe Neguse of Colorado".

Ocasio-Cortez told NPR she had "no problem" saying that such an overhaul would be require "massive government intervention".

While focusing on renewable energy, Ocasio-Cortez said the plan would include existing nuclear power plants but block new nuclear plants.

From left, Democratic Representatives Kathy Castor of Florida, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY and Donna Shalala of Florida listen as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi speaks during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol on January 30. Earlier Thursday, progressive lawmakers published an outline of the proposal which they claim is created to solve "climate change" and "systemic injustice" by reducing "pollution and greenhouse gas emissions" to meet "100 percent of the power demand" through "clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources".
