However, he will not force Cohen to "do anything to interfere with the [ongoing] Mueller investigation". Mueller's team in court filings wrote that Cohen provided "useful information concerning certain discrete Russia-related matters core to its investigation".

Cohen said in a statement he had accepted an invitation to testify from Representative Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Cohen has not yet committed to testify to either of the intelligence committees.

"He'll have a chance to tell his side of the story, and we'll have a chance to question him".

It's not yet clear what specific topics might be off limits.

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff welcomed Cohen's decision to testify and said it will it will be necessary for him "to answer questions pertaining to the Russian Federation investigation".

"This will be a day that President Trump is going to hate", Tapper said. "He hasn't agreed but I think there's a good likelihood".

Cummings has sent document requests to the White House and the Trump Organization that seek to determine why Trump, who reimbursed Cohen for the hush-money payments, omitted that debt on his public financial disclosure form. Cohen has said Trump directed him to do so to avoid any negative fallout for his presidential campaign.

Speaking on Cohen's testimony later in the day, Trump said he's "not anxious at all".

During his sentencing, Cohen said his "blind loyalty to this man [Trump] that led me to choose a path of darkness over light". "It was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds", he said.

Cohen, who once said that he'll "take a bullet" for Trump, told a judge last month that his "blind loyalty" to the USA leader led him to "cover up his dirty deeds".

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., who sits on the oversight panel, accused Democrats Thursday of making "a political decision, not an oversight decision" in calling Cohen to testify.

Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, said Cohen's appearance is "voluntary" and that the committee, newly controlled by Democrats, will be careful not to undermine the continuing Russian Federation investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller for many months has been investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign and potential obstruction of justice.

One issue is Trump Tower Moscow.

In August, Cohen plead guilty to federal tax fraud, bank fraud, and violating federal campaign finance law, including payouts to Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels, two women who claim to have had affairs with Trump.

President Donald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, will testify publicly before Congress next month.

The oversight hearing may not be Cohen's only appearance. He added, "As a lawyer, Mr. Cohen should have known better".

Cohen's scheduled testimony is a significant early sign that House Democrats are determined to deliver on their pledges to pursue investigations of the president and those around him.

"No, I'm not anxious about it at all", Trump told reporters during a visit to Mission, Tex.
