Washington subsequently said she believed the shooting was racially motivated, the Daily Mail reported. Black is now being held at the Harris County Jail without bond and is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow morning.

A suspect sketch of the man who shot and killed 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes is seen in images released by the Harris County Sheriff's Office. He says, "At this point, it does not appear it was related to race".

An overflow crowd of more than 500 gathering to support Jazmine's family.

Black has been charged with capital murder.

Black allegedly cooperated with the investigation and said the pistol used in the shooting was in his home.

Authorities on Thursday also released a short video of what they believe is the red truck the suspect drove.

Hundreds of people who gathered at a rally Saturday for a 7-year-old Houston girl whose killer remains at large were asked to think of the victim as their own child and to be part of an "army" that will help authorities catch the person who fatally shot her.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney advising the Barnes family, said the arrest "was welcome news to the family".

In a statement, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner thanked authorities for their "diligent work" in arresting 20-year-old Eric Black Jr. "The source said that they did not realize the vehicle that they had shot into was the complainant's vehicle until seeing it on the news later in the day". When the two men taken into custody were African-American, the prior description didn't fit the focus of the intense investigation that had been going on for a week. Prosecutors say he was driving the vehicle that pulled alongside the Barnes family auto and that someone else shot into the auto.

After the shooting, a composite sketch of a white man in a dark hood was widely circulated.

At a court hearing early Sunday, prosecutors said a confidential source had contacted the sheriff by email and told him the killers had "shot the auto by mistake", thinking the vehicle was someone else's that they had seen earlier that night.

Detectives have also arrested a second suspect Larry Woodruffe, 24.

The Harris County Sherriff's Office say 20-year-old Eric Black Jr. was charged early Sunday with capital murder in the December 30 slaying of Jazmine Barnes. Investigators said a tip led to his arrest and that Black allegedly admitted to his role in the shooting, adding that they are continuing to pursue leads that could result in more people being charged.
