Trump Gives Weird History Lesson on Afghanistan and Russia

U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that the Soviet Union was in the "right" when it occupied Afghanistan for almost a decade did not go down well with many Afghans, and his take on Moscow's justification for invading the country was also questioned.

The U.S. continues to keep 14,000 American servicemen and women in Afghanistan to execute counterterrorism missions against extremists to prevent a repeat of 9/11 and train and advise Afghan security forces, which are leading the fight against the Taliban.

"At this critical stage of history, where the world is full of confusion and changing, the majority of world countries have new assessments in every sphere". Trump - who has taken a notably sympathetic tone to Russian Federation and their leader, Vladimir Putin - insisted the decades old conflict was necessary for the Soviet Union in order to repel terrorism. But in a freaky aside, the president defended the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.

The Soviet Union fully withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, and the pro-Soviet government it had installed there collapsed in 1992 following a civil war with the Mujahideen. "It is for the people to decide whether they want to have an worldwide presence in Afghanistan or not", he said. "The Afghans did not carry out suicide attacks during the Jihad and they did not pose any threat to any country", the statement concluded.

The US President alleged that Pakistan has not been fair to the United States. It harks back to an older isolationist streak in American politics - when the country looked inward and engaging with foreign powers and realities was seen as inherently corrupting. Pakistan is there. They should be fighting. It is baffling to see how Pakistan recently dispatched Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on a four-nation tour that included Afghanistan, China, Iran and Russian Federation. "They were right to be there", he said.

He noted that India and Afghanistan were "eye-to-eye" on fighting terrorism and the peace process.

Trump brought up India's aid during a rambling press appearance at a cabinet meeting as he defended his push for the United States to invest less overseas.

A day after US President Donald Trump has mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over funding a "library" in war-torn Afghanistan, the Congress, which is PM Modi's arch-rival in politics, has slammed Mr Trump to "stop mocking Indian PM". "You know, a lot of these places you're reading about now are no longer part of Russian Federation, because of Afghanistan".

Regarding the new United States special envoy on Afghanistan Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad's proposal for peace in Afghanistan, sources said Kabul is very clear that any peace process will have to be Afghan-led. That's like five hours of what we spend (in Afghanistan.) And we're supposed to say (to Modi), "Oh, thank you for the library".

What no one seems to have pointed out, however, is how disturbing it is that India and none other than its own Prime Minister have so ridiculously misread Trump to the extent that they actually thought that he was a man of "high culture" who would appreciate a library. Apart from providing assistance in several road projects and humanitarian works, the Indian government also offers scholarships to as many as 1,000 Afghan students each year to India.

One source told the paper: "India seeks to build capacities and capabilities of Afghan nationals and its institutions for governance and delivery of public service, develop socio-economic infrastructure, secure lives and promote livelihood".

"What's he done for me?"

Trump criticized Mattis during Wednesday's meeting, specifically mentioning his handling of Afghanistan.

Mohib, who was earlier deputy chief of staff in the presidential office and then an ambassador in Washington, noted that since 2014, Afghanistan has been preparing for "full self-reliance" by the self-imposed deadline of 2024.
