Rangers agree deal for Jermain Defoe from Bournemouth

Defoe has fallen out of favour at Bournemouth this term and has made just eight appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe's side.

Rangers are closing in on a loan swoop for Defoe which many at the club feel would be a massive coup, albeit largely based on the false assumption that the diminutive 36-year-old journeyman is in fact a towering 16-year-old prodigy.

Gerrard has now identified Defoe as the man to bolster his attacking options and an 18-month loan move is very close to being completed as the striker gets set to link up with former England team-mate.

"He is somebody the Rangers fans will want to see and also Steven Davis, a return of an old face potentially".

Many players have come up from England with big reputations but struggled in Scotland, including Joey Barton, Carlton Cole and Niko Kranjcar all failing to make an impact in recent seasons. "If it is a possibility then we will help him to do so". "He has done a lot for this club".

Davis joined Southampton from Rangers in 2012 and has made 226 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals.

A pre-contract agreement with Rangers, however, would leave his current employers unhappy and the player in an awkward position.

Gerrard is also reportedly seeking to sign Charlie Adam, another former Rangers midfielder.

He could be the first of several new arrivals at Ibrox in this transfer window.

Rangers now sit second in the Scottish Premier League table, level on points with Celtic, but with a poorer goal differential and having played one more game.

McDonald coming in would suggest that Gerrard is thinking twice about securing Coulibaly permanently from French side Angers.
