Strange Light Over New York, Power Outages Following Transformer Explosion

- Residents of northwest Queens reported hearing loud bangs and seeing a very bright blue light flashing on the city's skyline Thursday night. "Literally so confused I think aliens just tried to steal NY", one user wrote on Twitter.

What happened: Officials say a transformer explosion at Con Edison lit up the sky with electric blue color. "No injuries, no fire, no evidence of extraterrestrial activity", the NYPD NEWS Twitter account reported, in an attempt to put even the most suspicious city dwellers at ease. InsideEdition.com's Lisa Voyticki reports.

Although LaGuardia has backup power, outages closed parts of the airport for a time.

The user would later update Twitter when the airport had restored its power.

In July 2006, a series of cable failures in Astoria led remaining power cables - and, yes, transformers - to fail and catch fire, leading to a weeks-long blackout to much of northwestern Queens. No flights took off between 9:22 and 10:23 p.m. ET, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking data company. "It was so big it was like the whole sky turned blue", said Astoria resident Ziad Elnokrashy.

Another Twitter user noted that people had been warned to change their ways: "What's happening in the sky in NY? Or give me another reason why the sky is blue on this NY night!"

Closer to the power plant, Peter Dipietrantonio said he and his girlfriend heard a bang and then saw a "green aura" fill his window.

Mayor Bill de Blasio's spokesperson Eric Phillips tweeted that the lights were attributable to a "blown transformer".

The unusual blue light sparked rampant speculation as to what was going on.

An electrical fault is basically just an electrical current that isn't behaving as it should, and Con Edison is still investigating what caused the fault in this case.
