Snow is expected to come down heavily after midnight Wednesday while many people no doubt are snug in their beds, perhaps still dreaming of Christmas.

Whether it's snow, a wintry mix, or freezing rain, gusty winds will reduce visibility, and roads will be messy, so travel will be poor across the Northland through Thursday.

Areas from northeastern South Dakota to southeastern North Dakota and west-central Minnesota are expected to receive a storm total of 12-18 inches of snow.

Winter storm warnings deal more with the amount of snow either falling or expected to fall.

By Thursday night, however, temperatures will start to fall and all rain that fell through the day will freeze which could lead to some treacherous travel for at least the first part of Friday.

The section of the storm that was prompting a blizzard warning covered the eastern half of each of the Dakotas as of Thursday morning, as well as parts of Kansas and Nebraska. Snow will gradually taper off on Friday.

In a special weather statement, Environment Canada said "a significant winter storm is expected Thursday night into Friday night". Highs will top out in the low-40s, but the temps will oddly continue to rise as we head through the night.

Residents in Chicago's Humboldt Park dig out after an early winter snowstorm dumped several inches snow on the neighborhood on November 26.

Blizzards occur when gusts of 35 miles per hour or more mix with snow. Colder weather returns over the weekend with temperatures topping out in the mid-20s on Saturday. By Christmas Day a year ago, the high topped out at 6 below and went colder-to 16 degrees below overnight.

Passengers flying United Airlines on December 26 and 27 will be able to reschedule flights through December 30. New Year's Eve promises to be blustery with a high of 21 and an overnight low of 7 below.
