Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx
On Tuesday, chipmaker Qualcomm announced the first mobile chip that supports the 5G mobile network.
Both Verizon and AT&T are showing off 5G at the summit. The event is an opportunity for us to gather technology press and analysts from all over the world and showcase our breakthrough technologies and new premium-tier platform - inventions that will empower the mobile ecosystem for years to come. "Qualcomm has worked relentlessly to drive the development and commercialization of 5G, inventing the leading breakthrough technologies that will fuel this area", Amon said as he wrapped up his keynote.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is said to feature the company's fourth generation, multi-core Qualcomm AI Engine, with up to three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation mobile platform.
"OnePlus and Samsung have committed to launching 5G handsets in the U.S. in 2019, Motorola has its god-awful 5G Mod for the Z3 (which we'll be seeing demoed here in Maui), and you can bet that every phonemaker will be plastering the internet with "[COMPANY] LAUNCHES FIRST [MEANINGLESS METRIC] 5G SMARTPHONE" press releases for the next year. At the same conference past year, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 845. 5G will, indeed, be the killer feature for smartphones of 2019, and it'll be a big differentiator.
The best thing about this processor is that it should be the first one to support the 5G networks over the Snapdragon X50 modem. Commercial 5G testing will be rolling out in 2019 with mobile devices and network launches taking place in North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia and China. "The future we imagine with 5G is just beginning, and it is a great time to be a consumer". Although the upgrades being introduced this year will really help with AI processing, 5G and XR are mostly going to be one of those marketing gimmicks for a while.
Qualcomm doesn't make phones itself so it needs partners willing to put its technology inside their devices. For more information, stay tuned to XDA-Developers, as we'll have plenty of coverage and details to share throughout the week!
Alongside the announcement of the new chipset, Qualcomm also debuted its new in-display fingerprint technology that is already available to manufacturers and will be launched in commercial phones in 2019. This marks the Snapdragon's first shrink in transistor size since 2016. In addition, the company says that its 3D Sonic Sensor will be able to detect fingerprints, even if there are "numerous contaminants" on the display, while providing high levels of accuracy and security.
