USDA expands ground beef recall, says 12 million pounds pose salmonella risk

An Arizona company is expanding a recall for ground beef to include more than 12 million pounds of raw beef products.

It comes two months after the USDA issued a recall of 6.5 million pounds of beef from the same manufacturer, JBS Tolleson, Inc, which is the third-largest producer in the United States and the top meat packager in the world.

Investigators say 246 people from 26 states became ill from what may be salmonella contamination from July 26 to September 7, 2018.

People were falling sick with salmonella in 16 states across the USA throughout August.

An additional 5.1 million pounds of beef have been added to a recall that was first issued in October.

Products subject to recall will have "EST. 267" within the USDA mark of inspection, the agency says.

Consumers with affected products should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Otherwise healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days.

In general the USDA and their public health partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state public health officials, said no one should be eating partially cooked or raw meat and that salmonella is prevalent and can be present in raw poultry or meat.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. A full list of products can be found here and a full list of product labels, here. Most people recover on their own but those who experience persistent diarrhea may need to be hospitalized.

The FSIS warning included a concern that the recalled beef products may be in people's freezers.

Those at most risk for severe illness include people with weakened immune systems, babies and elderly individuals. "Other cuts of beef should be cooked to a temperature of 145°F and allowed to rest for at least 3 minutes", USDA said.
