NASA reveals the companies that will help build US Moon base and lunar landers

"Navigating humans to the moon and back almost 50 years ago was an incredibly proud moment for the engineers and scientists at Draper", CEO Kaigham Gabriel said. All contracts to be signed are indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity and have a combined value of $2.6 billion for the following ten years.

NASA has not said anything about the condition of the other instruments on board, which include a French-made seismometer to study Marsquakes and a German self-hammering mole to measure heat's escape from the planet.

"We're no stranger to commercial space business models, having built more than 100 commercial satellites and launched numerous Atlas and Titan commercial payloads", said Lisa Callahan, vice president and general manager for Commercial Civil Space at Lockheed Martin. That's because Musk, the company's founder, is pursuing to reach the moon and Mars with BFR.

Back in August, NASA selected the companies that will be in charge with creating tipping point technologies for sending new spacecraft to the Moon and safely landing them there. "We've never done anything that fast", said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, which manages the contracts with these firms.

"The moon, therefore, is a much more logical goal".

Russian space agency Roscosmos recently issued a press release and unveiled their lunar mission plans.

Astrobotic formed in 2007 during the Google Lunar XPRIZE, a $20 million competition that aimed to spur private exploration of the moon.

Draper: A Cambridge-based company focused on developing general engineered systems for corporate, government, and academic solutions.

The entrepreneur recently settled a lawsuit with the US Securities and Exchange Commission concerning his fraudulent statement on Twitter that he was taking his electric vehicle and energy company, Tesla, private with "funding secured".

The nine companies already have not-quite-finished hardware.

The announcement came just three days after NASA landed a spacecraft on Mars. It also enables us to have multiple providers competing on cost and innovation so we can have more access than we could otherwise have if we did it on our own. "[But] the other question that always comes up was, What was the culture of NASA?" he said. "This is like a venture capital kind of effort where at the end of the day, the risk is high but the return is also very high for a low investment". Whenever they get to the moon, they may not be alone. Robotic exploration of Mars has been underway for years, with the InSight mission landing on the surface this week and another rover landing planned for 2020.
