Oddly, Instagram is still up and running, seemingly without an issue.

This error message popped up when we tried to get on Facebook.

In addition to the North American outages, there were also reports of Facebook outages in portions of South America.

DownDetector, which monitors website outages, reported about a 5,000 percent spike in reported Facebook problems Monday afternoon, with most reporting a "total blackout".

It's unclear at this time what caused the problem, which lasted around 30 minutes.

'We quickly investigated and restored access for everyone. "We're sorry for the inconvenience", the spokesperson said.

We turned to Twitter to sample reaction from subscribers to the popular social media service.

Other media reports show that connectivity issues were happening all over the country.

Some users in the United Kingdom reported problems with the site today as well, though countries in the Eastern Hemisphere largely appear to have dodged the worst of it.

Facebook has 1.49 billion daily users, according to public information posted by the company, itself.
