Danny Welbeck: Arsenal say forward has 'significant' ankle injury

Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night at the Emirates Stadium, but fans were not happy with the performance of one of their stars.

The attacker required an oxygen mask as he was treated on the pitch, with a leg brace also in place after landing awkwardly on his ankle while trying to attack a header from his Swiss colleagues' centre.

The Spaniard - who is now at Villarreal - certainly knows a lot about serious injuries after his Achilles issues which plagued the final years of his Arsenal career. "He's in hospital now and we'll see what happens", defender Rob Holding said.

Arsenal head into their Premier League encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers having put together a nine-match unbeaten streak in the top flight.

That was the last of the meaningful action as Arsenal failed to score for just the second time under Emery - but it will be Welbeck's injury that dominates the fall-out.

"His injury was hard for the mentality of the players because they looked at the injury".

The home side had a couple of chances to get all three points, however, an injury to Danny Welbeck took the gloss off of the result.

"This injury is very big for him, for us and for everyone".

The incident knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails but Welbeck's replacement Aubameyang hit the crossbar as the visitors offered very little in terms of an attacking threat.

"I think Arsenal should come out now and say they're going to give him a contract extension", he told talkSPORT. He broke something in his ankle and it's a different injury than another. First it's in your mind - you think for the player.
