Liverpool face the threat of crashing out at the Champions League group stages after a shock 2-0 defeat to Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian capital on Tuesday (Nov 6).

"The boys are very disappointed, I'm very disappointed and we have to do better".

Jurgen Klopp's side now sit top of Group C on six points after thrashing Red Star Belgrade 4-0 in the reverse fixture at Anfield last month but the Reds boss knows it will be a much tougher task this evening in front of the hostile Marakana crowd.

And after the latest frustration for Liverpool, Milner told BT Sport: "We didn't start well enough".

"They were on their bikes and we had to deal with the situation".

Much is being made of the intimidating atmosphere that awaits Liverpool's players inside the Rajko Mitic Stadium but defender Andy Robertson has urged his team-mates to lean on their experiences away from home a year ago.

Pavkov rose highest in a crowded penalty area to power home Marko Marin's corner to spark wild scenes of celebration.

Almost three decades on, Red Star don't have a household name in their squad and needed to qualify for the group stage through the playoffs.

After playing a pivotal role Liverpool's 4-0 defeat of Red Star in Anfield, Shaqiri had deemed himself up to the challenge of playing in the fiery atmosphere of Belgrade.

For that reason Klopp said a pragmatic decision was taken to leave the player at home to allow the focus to remain on football.

Shaqiri comes from an ethnic Albanian family from Kosovo, a former Serbian province.

Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah hit the woodwork in the second half, as Jurgen Klopp made two half-time substitutions in an attempt to rescue a result.

"These games are always tough to start off with and Red Star Belgrade will give Liverpool plenty to deal with in the opening stages but once they get over that then they've got the skill to get a couple of goals". Shaqiri is our player, we love him, and he will play for us a lot of times, but not on Tuesday.

Liverpool missed out on the chance to move within touching distance of qualification from Group C as two first-half goals from Milan Pavkov saw Red Star record a historic victory - their first in the Champions League since 1992.
