Parker Solar Probe breaks speed record, becomes closest spacecraft to sun

NASA's Parker Solar Probe, which launched earlier this year, has set a new record for becoming the closest human-made object to the Sun, the USA space agency announced Monday.

The spacecraft passed the current record of 42.73 million km from the sun's surface on October 29 as calculated by the Parker Solar Probe team, NASA said in a statement. "The current record for heliocentric speed is 153,454 miles per hour, set by Helios 2 in April 1976", says the blog post, hinting that the probe has a long way to go.

When the Parker Solar Probe makes its first pass around the Sun, on November 5, 2018, it will reach a closest distance (perihelion) of just 24.8 million km, and it will be travelling at a speed of 342,000 km/h.

The probe has been launched for just 78 days, according to Andy Driesman, project manager at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

In the year 2025, Parker Solar Probe is estimated to get a speed of 692,012 km/h (430,000 mph) which will for sure break all the records. It broke the record set by the Helios 2 probe in 1976.

"It's a proud moment for the team, though we remain focused on our first solar encounter, which begins on October 31", Driesman said. Since them, the probe will make a total of 24 perihelions, moving away from the planet Venus and getting closer to the Sun's corona for the best observations that were ever reported about the Sun. It was released so that it can be found to find out what things affect the earth in the solar system.

This unmanned spacecraft, built at the cost of 1.5 billion dollars, was launched in August. The Probe measures its own speed and position, the Deep Space Network or DSN then retrieves that data before sending it to NASA ground control. Wayne has a flair for gathering data and information through extensive research efforts and has a strong set of skills to cover nearly any domain easily and produce reports that are easy to understand and aid in making well-informed decisions.

How did the Parker Solar Probe's journey of 90 million miles begin? This means that it will be within the crown of the Sun, that is the outer layers of its atmosphere where temperatures can reach 500 thousand Kelvin (about 500 thousand degrees Celsius) and even several millions of Kelvins.

The Parker spacecraft's first solar encounter will begin today.
