Police say Baldwin was backing into an open parking spot when a man in a different vehicle came in from behind him and took the spot.

When they arrived they found a 49-year-old man with an injury to his jaw.

The actor was taken into custody just before 2pm on Friday in Manhattan's West Village neighbourhood, police said. He was later released and will face a judge at a future date.

Alec Baldwin was arrested on Friday morning (November 2), according to TMZ. According to reports, he became "belligerent" with the officers and refused to provide an ID.

"In an orderly and formal way, and lawful way, we need to overthrow the government of the United States under Donald Trump", Baldwin said.

On Twitter, Baldwin tweeted out the name and badge number of the person who arrested him, stating that NY has become a "carnival of stupidity" where revenue-hungry police incriminate people for things that were once thought as harmless. When President Trump was asked about the incident by White House reporters earlier today, he answered: "I wish him luck". He was later acquitted.

This isn't Baldwin's first brush with the law.

"That Mr. Zanger felt it was appropriate to videotape my home and my family for his own profit is unacceptable to me", Baldwin's statement continued. In the message, he screamed at his daughter for not picking up his scheduled call.

In 2011, the former "30 Rock" star was removed from a flight after refusing to stop playing the game "Words With Friends" on his phone.

He denied punching a newspaper photographer in 2012 who was trying to take photos of him with his then fiancee, yoga teacher Hilaria Thomas.
