Nintendo announces final two characters of 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'

Today's Nintendo Direct was fully dedicated to the incoming Smash Bros game, which launches on December 7 and is sure to be a big seller over the coming months. Ultimate, which features Kirby as the long hero (and true savior, mind you) standing tall after an attack pretty much wipes out all the characters from the game, turning them into Spirits.

Immediately, Street Fighter's Ken is shown as an Echo Fighter, and Pokemon's Incineroar are joining the fight. While plenty of people had foretold of Ken's appearance, the inclusion of Incineroar is a little more left-field, though his pro-wrestling flavoured moveset should be a hit with a certain subset of players.

That brings the base game's final roster of characters to seventy-frickin'-four, 66 of which you'll unlock as you play.

Nintendo posted the following details about the characters to Twitter during the announcement livestream.

DLC has been confirmed for the game that will be out post launch.

Alternatively, you can buy the Fighters Pass for £22.49 now and get an exclusive Mii Fighter costume of Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

These selections aren't particularly surprising-they were expected before the whole Grinch debacle-but they are a welcome finale to the 74 fighter lineup. In Smash World, people can share videos and check stats. Spirits are characters who've lost their physical forms and whose only remaining use is to help those who still have a chance to save themselves. You'll be able to level them all up by feeding them candles that you collect along the way, as well as by sending them off for training or searching for treasure while your Switch is off.

Additionally, these "spirits" will also be used to power up your added amiibo fighters. What impact it'll have on casual players remains to be seen.

Last week's Grinch leak in particular, which gave some Smash fans hope that Banjoe Kazooie and other odd characters would be added into the game at release, turns out to have clearly been a hoax. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai stressed that the DLC is still in the early stages, with his team focusing instead on finishing the game first.
