Mourinho praises Pogba’s penalty courage in much-needed Man Utd win

"The goalkeepers know his running, they don't move and they are waiting for his decision so he has to learn from that but for me the most important thing is he wants to go again".

Victory vindicated Mourinho's decision to drop Romelu Lukaku from his starting line-up although the United manager, while claiming he was happy with his team's performance, followed up with a damning analysis of his side's current limitations.

So is it time to change the technique and go for a more conventional run-up?

The Englishman had a decent game as he did his defensive duties well for United. He took an incredible 10 second run up before having his penalty saved brilliantly by Jordan Pickford, with the rebound falling straight at his feet for him to put away.

Pogba and Martial netted either side of half-time as United emerged 2-1 victors against Marco Silva's Everton side, although Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty brought a nervy conclusion to Sunday's game.

Anthony Martial (Man United).

Silva was less pleased with United's French connection, as he accused Martial of diving to win the penalty award from Jon Moss. It was the faintest of touches though, in the referee's defence and seemed all but impossible to detect in real time.

"I believe with Lukaku that this will happen, but the reality is that in this moment it's not happening".

United thought they had a second on the half-hour mark, with Marcus Rashford pouncing from a save by Pickford, but was offside and the goal was ruled out.

Everton huffed and puffed but could not get that second goal.

Mourinho, the self-acclaimed "Special One" when he first arrived on these shores, has appeared to be at loggerheads with club management, players, former players, the media and just about anybody else who fancies an argument all season long.

Everton won a penalty on 76 minutes after Pogba lost possession and Sigurdsson played in Richarlison who was felled by Smalling. United had looked largely comfortable until then before things started getting a little itchy.

Lukaku drew howls of derision as he failed to make the most of a right wing cross from Pogba, his weak header sailing aimlessly wide of the target.

"We didn't deserve the result, for me it's clear", he said "When you play here and create the chances we created".

With Arsenal dropping points against Palace and City clashing with Spurs, later on, this could very well be the start of the period which leads them to the position Mourinho spoke about.
