Authorities intercepted suspicious packages sent to former US President Barack Obama, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the Time Warner Center in NY, officials said on Wednesday.

Neither the Clintons nor the Obamas had been at risk of receiving the packages because of screening procedures, the Secret Service said.

A package containing a crude pipe bomb prompted the evacuation of CNN offices in Manhattan Wednesday morning.

In addition, the NY offices of U.S. cable news channel CNN have been evacuated on Wednesday morning after a suspicious device was discovered in the building's mail room.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said his office received a similar package, but New York police officials said the office was cleared and no device was found.

At least eight suspicious parcels were intercepted before reaching any intended recipients, including Obama's attorney general, Eric Holder, former CIA Director John Brennan and prominent Democratic Party donor George Soros.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, in a written statement, condemned what she described as "attempted violent attacks" against the two former first families. United States president Donald Trump was briefed on potential explosives situation with Clinton and Obama.

A police bomb squad was also sent to TV new channel CNN's offices in New York City and the newsroom was evacuated because of a suspicious package.

Not long after, he referred to his 2016 opponent as "Crooked Hillary Clinton", prompting a round of "Lock her up!" chants.

On Wednesday, explosives were found in mail addressed to Hillary Clinton, the Obamas, and CNN.

He thanked law enforcement and added: "Those responsible will be brought to justice".

The official said the White House is taking the situation "extremely seriously".

The official, who viewed X-ray images of the device, wasn't authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Following the reports, the police stated that the package appeared to have an explosive device and an envelope with white powder inside.

The president and his aides routinely criticise CNN over its coverage, and he calls the network an example of fake news.

"The people of NY city will not be intimidated", de Blasio said.

"Any acts or threats of political violence are an attack on our democracy itself", Trump said.

The NYPD said the package to CNN was reported to police at 9.53am local time on Wednesday.
