Online bids for the 22 items can be placed between 31 October and 8 November.

The online sale announced on Monday by auctioneer Christie's features 22 items from Hawking, including his doctoral thesis on the origins of the universe, some of his many awards, and scientific papers such as Spectrum of Wormholes and Fundamental Breakdown of Physics in Gravitational Collapse.

Included among the items belonging to the iconic scientist will be one of his wheelchairs, one of five copies of his Cambridge University Ph.D. thesis "Properties of Expanding Universes", and a script from one of his appearances on the television show "The Simpsons".

Christie's of London will open bidding on a trove of fascinating, historic, and just plain cool items from Hawking's private collection, including recognizable pieces of his formative past that, for longtime followers and fans, have become as much a part of his identity as his groundbreaking work in quantum mechanics.

A motorized BEC Mobility wheelchair, now on sale on the Christie's website, was one of the many Hawking used during his life.

"The lots selected for sale highlight Professor Hawking's remarkable achievements in science alongside his unique personality and inspirational life story", Thomas Venning, Head of the Books and Manuscripts department, said in a statement.

Hawking suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which is usually fatal within a few years.

World-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking died in March at age 76.

This particular chair is the last one used by Hawking while he still had control of his hands and before needing more sophisticated technology.

As the disease progressed, Hawking began using a wheelchair and communicating with others using a voice-generating computer.

The auction includes a copy of Hawking's famous book "A Brief History of Time" with his fingerprint.

By the late 1980s he was at the height of his fame, and given his extensive travels to conferences and public events, as well as the scope of his intellectual explorations of space-time, Christie's said the wheelchair on sale "is arguably both literally and metaphorically the most-travelled wheelchair in history". Proceeds from the wheelchair will be donated to charities. A Book, written and corrected with handwritten annotation by Stephen Hawking is one of the personal and academic possessions.
