Melania Trump: 'Glad' both Kavanaugh and Ford were heard

Vote set for Kavanaugh confirmation

Vote set for Kavanaugh confirmation

Deborah Ramirez says the Senate is "looking the other way" when it comes to her accusation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh exposed himself to her when they were students at Yale.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat".

Republicans "conducted one of the least transparent, least fair, most biased processes in Senate history, slanting the table from the very beginning to produce their desired result", he added.

Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, a fellow moderate and friend of Collins, became the only Republican to say she opposed Kavanaugh.

The Kavanaugh saga however also forced the GOP to come down on the opposite side of the #MeToo movement, that has forced society to give greater credence to women who make allegations about powerful men and is now a significant political force.

While the official vote isn't expected until Saturday, Kavanaugh now has a clear path to a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land, despite the sexual misconduct allegations that have been brought against him by Christine Blasey Ford and two other women. They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing allegations of connections between the president's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation tried to pursue him in court. "We've heard those voices and I hope we have all learned something, that we owe it to the victims of sexual assault to do more and to do better and to do it now with them".

There was huge relief at the White House where Trump watched a vote that takes him one final step closer to becoming the Republican president who enshrined a conservative majority on the Supreme Court - an achievement that will elevate him in history.

Protesters occupy the Senate Hart building during a rally against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on Thursday.

Throughout the process, left-wing political activists, paid community organizers, and protesters have shouted down Kavanaugh supporters, repeatedly interrupted hearings and media interviews, and sought to intimidate undecided senators.

Kavanaugh was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy Saturday evening.

Trump, throughout the day, insisted Kavanagh would not be tainted by the sexual assault allegations from Christine Blasey Ford and others that almost tanked his nomination.

One lone Republican, Sen. Flake announced Friday morning that he would support Kavanaugh's confirmation, reiterating his statement of support the previous week.

It was the closest roll call to confirm a justice since 1881, when Stanley Matthews was approved 24-23, according to Senate records. Enough senators have indicated they will support him Saturday to put him over the edge, with a likely margin of two votes.

As the Senate tried to recover from its charged atmosphere, Murkowski's move offered a moment of civility.

Collins announced her decision in a lengthy speech on the Senate floor Friday afternoon, much of which was spent refuting Democratic criticism that Kavanaugh would overturn the Affordable Care Act or Roe v. Wade.

The fundraiser crossed the $3 million threshold at about 11 a.m. EDT Saturday.

After the vote, the president called Kavanaugh to congratulate him, the White House said in a statement.

"I think that the MS speech had a great impact, yes - I think it was a very important thing", Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to a political rally in Topeka, Kansas.

Though they reached opposite conclusions, both women had faced similar political pressure heading into Friday's key vote on Kavanaugh's high court nomination.

Trump alleged Avenatti had made "false accusations about me" in the past and said he would love to see libel laws get tougher.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said, "The Senate has been an embarrassment".

He voted to advance the nominee, then told reporters that barring any dramatic changes, he will vote yes on Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation. "We have a lot of work to do".
