Intel introduces new 9th generation Core i9 processor for desktop gaming

The rated TDP is 95W, and Intel points out that compared to the Core i7-8700K, the new Core i9-9900K has more cores with similar frequencies running within the same thermal envelope. "Intel said that the 9th Gen Intel Core i9-9900K processor achieved up to 309 frames per second (FPS) on Rainbow Six: Siege; up to 224 FPS on Fortnite; up to 440 FPS on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive; and up to 221 FPS on PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds", wrote VentureBeat. One of the most interesting announcements is Core i9-9900K which has been labeled as "the best gaming processor in the world". The reduction in L3 cache could also be a nod to this, or a desire to reduce the manufacturing cost of the Core i5 and Core i7 chips. Some users have taken to ripping off the IHS, a process known as delidding, to replace Intel's thermal interface material with liquid metal for better temps.

Based on Intel's internal testing, the new chips offer the sort of performance improvement you'd expect from an incremental architecture update. Again it has a base frequency of 3.6GHz but the default max turbo is 4.9GHz on a single core or 4.6GHz on all cores.

Today at Fall Desktop Launch Event, Intel unveiled the 9th-generation Core i9-9900K, i7-9700K and i5-9600K processors for desktops. These SKUs finally bring core-count parity with AMD's first and second generation 8-core Ryzen CPUs in the mainstream space. B&H Photo, for example, has the Core i9-9900K listed at $529.99, the Core i7-9700K at $399, and the Core i5-9600K at $279.99. It features a base clock of 3.6GHz and a boost clock of 4.9GHz.

For the ultra-premium niche and overclockers, Intel also announced the new 28 core, 56 thread unlocked Intel Xeon W-3175X processor.

These new chips will be the first to have hardware fixed for the Meltdown Variant 3 and L1 Terminal Fault problems, while the remaining issues are solved through software. The 1-core CPU boost is 4.6GHz, 2-core at 4.5GHz, 4-core at 4.4GHz and 6-core at 4.3GHz.

KitGuru Says: We'll be talking more about Intel's new CPUs over the next few weeks, in addition to the slew of motherboards set to roll out. The new CPUs are backward-compatible with the Z370 chipset as well, so you won't need to worry about being locked out of this upgrade if you have an older motherboard.
