Windies totter after Kohli, Jadeja hundreds

Virat Kohli: India captain breaks Sachin Tendulkar record with century v West Indies

Virat Kohli: India captain breaks Sachin Tendulkar record with century v West Indies

The Windies skipper believes there are a lot of learnings to take from India's batsmen going forward into the next Test and that it will put them in good stead.

"What I saw, it's not what you want, especially from your top order, chasing 600-plus".

After India had declared on 649-9 in its first and only innings, it ran through the West Indies batting line-up in 48 overs to set up an imposing 468-run lead. "That's why he's been pushed to the Test team", Kohli said after the win.

"Our guys understand how to play in these conditions and were clinical".

While Ravichandran Ashwin (4/37) was the pick of the bowlers in the morning, Kuldeep (5/57) was all over the opposition batsmen in the second innings on way to a maiden five-wicket haul in Tests. Ashwin picked 2 wickets for 71 runs.

Windies, missing skipper Jason Holder through injury and seamer Kemar Roach due to a family bereavement, did show some fight, with Roston Chase (53) and Keemo Paul (47) extending their first-innings, seventh-wicket stand to 73 after the visitors resumed on 94-6.

In this Asia Cup as well, he was not able to convert the chances given to him with the bat, although his performance behind the stumps with the gloves was quite impressive as usual.

Kieran Powell (83) then struck eight fours and four sixes in his 93-ball knock in Windies' second dig before becoming one of Kuldeep's victims, the bowler's figures of 5-57 beating the 4-40 he claimed against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in August 2017.

He trapped Hope lbw and then Shimron Hetmyer (11) was caught flashing at short third man, an unnecessary shot.

The victory is also India's biggest in terms of runs in Test cricket. He brought up his 24th Test century in the first Test against the Windies.

"That was a bit to do with the umpires pushing us as well, with these new rules coming in of not drinking too much water", Kohli said after the game, when asked of improved over-rates.

"We did talk about being positive in our team meetings".

"I couldn't have imagined my test debut like this. I was looking to play my natural game, the way I play in first-class cricket, and play the ball on the merit", Shaw said.

While the West Indies' Super50 (National One Day Meet), which started on October 3, is considered to be a parameter of selection, the schedule of the India series became an impediment towards selecting Pollard and Narine, who are playing the tournament to mend fences with the board.
