WATCH LIVE: Senate votes Friday in first step to possible Kavanaugh confirmation

Police on Saturday began arresting protesters who had gathered just feet (meters) from the entrance to the United States Capitol building, despite a barricade blocking off the area, as legislators inside prepared to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Eight Gonzaga law school professors are among the more than 2,400 signatories to a letter to the U.S. Senate asking the body not to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Joe Manchin (D-WV) will vote, however, he did vote to move the process forward during the cloture vote Friday morning as did Collins.

Collins noted that the Supreme Court confirmation process of Kavanaugh is akin to a "gutter-level political campaign" and a "dysfunctional circus" when it should be a "solemn occasion".

In a viral video, Collins was accosted by protesters this week on Capitol Hill.

During Saturday's vote, senators were showered with cries of "We will not forget", and "Survivors vote" from protesters in the Senate gallery. Senate Minority leader Charles Schumer urged people to get out and vote in November.

Shortly before the vote, Trump said Kavanaugh "will be a great justice of the Supreme Court". And I think's he's going to make us all very proud'. Collins has been targeted by Democrats hoping that the centrist Republican will vote against the judge's nomination. Last week, two women confronted Arizona Sen.

Kavanaugh fought back hard, denying the accusations in angry and tearful testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that was viewed live on television by around 20 million people.

Moments after Collins concluded her speech, Manchin tweeted, "I will vote to support Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh". "Fairness is most in jeopardy ... when passions are inflamed", she said on October 5, referring to allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.

The dramatic Senate floor announcement by perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican ended most of the suspense over a tortuous, election-season battle that had left Kavanaugh's fate in doubt for almost a month after the first accusation against him.

The lone Republican to oppose the nomination was Sen.

Though she knew Kavanaugh's chances of confirmation would be high when she arrived today, Piper said she still felt a sense of optimism.

Kavanaugh's two-vote victory in itself underscored how unusually divisive his nomination fight has been. She said, however, that she sets a high bar for nominees to win confirmation and talked about the importance of selecting judges who will act at all times in a manner that promotes "public confidence" in the judiciary. She told reporters that Kavanaugh is "a good man" but maybe "not the right man for the court at this time".

The only party dissenters were Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who had meant to vote no, and Democrat Joe Manchin, who voted yes.

If they have enough votes to move ahead with the nomination on Friday and have 50 without Daines on Saturday, they'll hold the vote.

In her statement, Ramirez went on to thank the witnesses who were not questioned by the FBI as part of its investigation into the accusations against Kavanaugh.

A vote is expected at about 2:30 p.m. "I have voted no". The pair was surrounded by colleagues from both parties after the vote. "I therefore withdraw my vote". She voted against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt.
