They were charged in 2014 with tax offences related to almost US$9 million (NZ$14m) in income.

Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino was sentenced to eight months behind bars and two years of supervised release today after his conviction on a single count of tax evasion in January. He got off relatively easy: Sorrentino faced a five-year prison sentence but will serve less than a year.

NJ.com reported that prosecutors said Sorrentino, 36, and his brother, Marc, created several businesses based on their in-person and television appearances, product endorsements, and product sales.

"The Situation" is going from the "Jersey Shore" house to a jail cell.

The reality star was sentenced in New Jersey federal court Friday. "People can look at me and say, 'If he can do it, I can'".

The show's spinoff, "Jersey Shore: Family Vacation" debuted earlier this year.

In pronouncing sentence, Wigenton commended Michael Sorrentino for his progress in overcoming substance abuse but stressed that his actions in the conspiracy were made knowingly. They went on to accuse the pair of earning $8.9 million between 2010 and 2012-and completely failing to pay federal taxes.

The pair was indicted in 2014 on charges of conspiring with their accountant to evade taxes by underreporting income.

The "Jersey Shore" star pleaded guilty earlier this year to tax evasion.

Sorrentino's brother, Marc, was sentenced to 24 months in prison and will have to pay restitution in addition to a $75,000 fine that must be paid within 30 days.
