Key senators back Trump Supreme Court nominee

Collins, as well as Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who had been undecided.

The Senate is expected to vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation Saturday.

A woman that Christine Blasey Ford claimed was at the party where Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her circa 1982 told FBI investigators that Dr. Ford's "allies" tried to pressure her to change her story about what happened. Two other women later emerged with sexual misconduct allegations from the 1980s, all of which Kavanaugh has denied.

Speaking to NPR after Collins and Manchin announced their support for Kavanaugh, a lawyer for Ford addressed whether the California professor feels she failed because confirmation is now a near certainty.

Some protesters, many dressed in black, crowded into the Hart Senate Office Building after rallying in front of the Supreme Court on a sunny, warm autumn day. "Her goal wasn't to derail this nomination, it was to inform the nomination and she's done that".

"Very proud of the U.S. Senate for voting "YES" to advance the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh!" the president tweeted afterward.

But the Senate ultimately voted to move Kavanaugh's nomination forward on Friday morning, and Collins several hours later announced she'd support his confirmation during the final vote on Saturday.

All eyes are on four swing senators for Saturday's final vote.

In a speech leading up to the vote, Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen.

Most obviously, that Murkowski is nearly certainly a "no" on Kavanaugh's confirmation. People shouted "shame, shame" as Manchin spoke to reporters about his decision.

Democrats called the Federal Bureau of Investigation report a whitewash and said the White House placed constraints on the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which did not speak to many potential witnesses.

In the end, Collins and Murkowski diverged. If the cloture votes hold, Republicans may go ahead and vote in Daines' absence and confirm Kavanaugh on a 50-49 vote.

Her harrowing testimony sparked a delay of the vote and a supplemental FBI investigation on the allegations.

The FBI was directed to look into "credible" allegations of sexual misconduct made by Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez against Kavanaugh.

A new poll of likely voters in Arizona's upcoming midterm elections conducted Monday and Tuesday found that Democrats view the retiring Republican more favorably than voters registered in his own party - and it's a wide gap.

The FBI report was not released to the public. "The second thing we know for sure is that there's no way anything we did would satisfy the Democrats".

Both Ford and Kavanugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committeee which was the last week. I might have been too emotional at times. "I have been wrestling to-to really try to know what is fair and what is right and the truth is none of this has been fair", Murkowski said Friday, adding, "I believe we are dealing with issues that are bigger than a nominee".

He left the hearing for extended talks with Senate Democrats, in particular with Coons. Orrin Hatch said; Collins' speech "was the best analysis of Judge Kavanaugh's record we have heard, a thorough review of questions raised, and a powerful explanation as to why he is worthy of consideration". Jeff Flake (R-AZ), another key vote, voted yes on the motion to cloture. Sen. Collins and a group of Senate Republicans reportedly had lunch with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Though they reached opposite conclusions, both women had faced similar political pressure heading into Friday's key vote on Kavanaugh's high court nomination.

Democrats saw something very different in the report.
