Fan Bingbing: China Makes Official Announcement About Missing X-Men Actress

Reuters, citing Chinese state media, said the actress' fines totaled 479 million yuan ($69.74 million), while her outstanding back taxes were calculated at 255 million yuan ($37 million).

If Fan doesn't pay the fines within the prescribed time limit, she could face criminal charges.

Fan apologized to her followers Wednesday with a post on Weibo, saying that she accepts the tax authorities' decision and would "try my best to overcome all difficulties and raise funds to pay back taxes and fines".

As well as the contentious split contracts, Xinhua said that Fan and companies she represented also evaded 248 million yuan ($34 million/£28 million) in taxes, but gave no further details regarding the companies or this figure. However, Xinhua indicated that her agent, Mou Enguang, was not as lucky and is in custody for allegedly obstructing the investigation.

"Without the party and the state's good policies, without the love from the people, there would have been no Fan Bingbing", she wrote.

The official announcement is a complicated one and doesn't make clear what proportion of the fines she'll personally be responsible for, but together with her "representative companies" and other "guilty parties", the total amount of related fines is likely to be over 800 million RMB and could come to nearly 1 billion RMB (145 million USD).

Speaking ominously of "enormous fears and worries" she faces over the mistakes she made in the past, she laments that, "I failed my country which nurtured me; I failed the country which trusted me; I failed the fans who loved me". However, fans can now breathe a sigh of relief as many have expressed worry for her. At 12:00 pm today, two hours after the Xinhua report was released, the 36-year-old actress issued a formal apology on her Weibo page, her first post since June 2, and the first time that she has been seen or heard from since that date.

The actress said: "For a while, due to my not understanding the relationship between benefits of the country, society, and individual, I and others took advantage of a "split contract" to avoid tax problems, and I am deeply ashamed". In a term that sound slightly racist, Cui accused Fan of using "ying-yang contracts" to lighten her tax burden.

However, Fan - who earned around £33million last year - previously denied any wrongdoing.

Last month, Beijing Normal University released a study which attempted to assign a "social responsibility rating" for each Chinese film and television star. Fan portrayed the character of Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past. "The bigger the brand, the more likely you are to attract scrutiny".
