The Senate Judiciary Committee is raising the curtain on what promises to be high drama - a hearing in which senators will listen to a woman accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her, then weigh his denial.

President Donald Trump, who is in NY attending the annual UN General Assembly session, came out in support of his Supreme Court nominee and slammed Avenatti.

"I believed he was going to rape me", she said.

Another woman came forward over the weekend, telling The New Yorker magazine that Kavanaugh exposed himself and caused her to touch his penis at a party when both were Yale freshmen.

As for the hearing with Ford on Thursday, Hill wasn't too optimistic it would be an improvement from her own hearing in 1991.

At one point during Klobuchar's questioning, he cut off her and said, "Can we hear from Dr. Ford?"

Bolstered by a career in public service, including numerous government security clearances, the fact that Swetnick signed her declaration "under penalty of perjury" and said she "fully understands the seriousness" of her charges did not keep Trump from calling her claims into question. Kavanaugh's ascendance to the high court could help lock in a conservative majority for a generation, shaping dozens of rulings on abortion, regulation, the environment and more.

"You're a disgusting excuse for a human being, and I don't know how you can live with yourself", one caller told a Grassley staff member. He said that he wanted to "apologize" to both of them "for the way you've been treated".

Some Democrats have called on Kavanaugh to withdraw in light of the allegations.

The Supreme Court's 2018 term officially begins on October 1.

Ford went on to describe a house party in the early 1980s when a drunken Kavanaugh allegedly sexually assaulted her in a bedroom, with his friend Mark Judge in the room. In the same remarks, the president also defended Kavanaugh and criticized the multiple allegations against the judge as a "big, fat con job" perpetrated by Democrats trying to stop the confirmation of a conservative judge to the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh and Ford were the only witnesses invited to testify before the panel of 11 Republicans - all men - and 10 Democrats. "But I have never done that to her or to anyone", his written testimony said.

"When somebody makes a serious allegation", Cornyn said Tuesday, "do they have a responsibility to bring forward evidence, corroborating witnesses, other evidence in so reasonable minds could satisfy themselves that what they're saying is true?"

In his prepared testimony, the 53-year-old appellate judge acknowledges drinking in high school with his friends, but says he's never done anything "remotely resembling" what Ford describes.

"Judge Kavanaugh is being considered for a promotion".

Senate Judiciary committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has said they will move ahead with the hearing Thursday.

In the transcript released Wednesday, Kavanaugh denied an allegation that he assaulted a woman he was dating in 1998 while working for independent counsel Ken Starr that investigators said stemmed from an anonymous complaint sent to Colorado GOP Sen. When this is over, one side is going to believe that the other has committed a great travesty of justice.
