Bill Cosby SENTENCED: 'Sexually violent predator' Bill Cosby JAILED for sexual assault

Actor and comedian Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse after his first day of sentencing hearings in his sexual assault trial in Norristown

Bill Cosby arrived in court on Tuesday to learn whether he will go to prison for sexual assault as his sentencing hearing in a Pennsylvania courtroom concludes, capping a remarkable fall from grace for the comedian once known as "America's Dad". O'Neill denied the request, ordering that Cosby immediately enter custody. Mr Cosby, this has all circled back to you.

Disgraced comic Bill Cosby's next gig will be in front of a captive audience at an American prison. They had also asked the judge to levy a $US25,000 ($35,000) fine on Cosby and make him pay court costs.

According to TMZ, Bill Cosby was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in Pennsylvania state prison following his sexual assault case coming to a close.

O'Neill also declared Cosby to be a "sexually violent predator", which will require him to register with Philadelphia state police, and submit to counselling and notification as a sex offender for life.

In an early example of the "Me Too" phenomenon, Cosby faced accusations from 60 women who accused him of sexual misconduct, abuse, and assault. However, most of those cases occurred outside the statute of limitations.

Montgomery County Judge Steven O'Neill made the decision as he weighed the punishment for Cosby for violating Temple University women's basketball administrator Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia estate in 2004.

On Monday, O'Neill has warned the courtroom that he thought it was unlikely that Cosby would receive three years or more, despite the charges making it possible for him to serve a full 30 years in prison.

Constand said in a written statement that the comedian "took my lovely healthy young spirit and crushed it".

The judge said he gave weight to the victim impact statements of Constand and her family, which he described as "powerful".

She said: "He robbed me of my health and vitality, my open nature, and my trust in myself and others". Chelsea Handler joked that when Cosby is released, he will be nominated for to the Supreme Court.

She said that Cosby's legal team's subsequent attacks on her character left her with "insurmountable stress and anxiety" and that she now lives alone with her two dogs, "stuck in a holding pattern" as a middle-aged woman because she has trouble trusting people.

State sentencing guidelines, which are not mandatory, recommend a sentence between two and four years, Mr Chanenson said.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele echoed the sentiment, adding that Cosby would commit similar crimes should he have the chance. "The jury thinks otherwise". The defense wants Cosby sent home on house arrest. "Eighty-one-year-old blind men who are not self-sufficient are not a danger, unless perhaps to themselves".

As The Associated Press puts it, "His Hollywood career and good-guy image in ruins, Bill Cosby was led away to prison in handcuffs Tuesday at age 81, sentenced to three to 10 years behind bars".

Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt said the former TV star planned to remain silent when given the opportunity to address the court. As Vox reports, Cosby's defense team previously pledged to appeal any prison time.
