Three newborn babies and two adults were stabbed during a pre-dawn attack at a suspected illegal childcare center in NY on Friday, allegedly carried out by a female employee, police said.

NY reports that authorities say the stabbings happened just before 4 a.m. Friday.

A 1-month-old and a 3-day-old baby were stabbed in the stomach.

The woman also stabbed a 31-year-old man, believed to be the father of one of the children, and a woman at the overnight nursery in Flushing, known as Mei Xin Care.

Holmes said the attack happened in a multi-family residential building, but investigators found paperwork indicating that a it is a day care.

A butcher knife and meat cleaver were found at the scene, Diamond reported.

The woman suspected of the attack was discovered bleeding and unconscious in the basement, police said.

"There was one child with more serious injuries than the other two", Holmes said.

All of those injured were taken to hospital in "critical but stable condition", police said, and are expected to survive.

Nine babies and some of their parents had been at the home at the time of the attack, police said.

Of the children present during Friday's assault, five were girls and four were boys, she said.
