Time running out for Kavanaugh’s accuser to talk: GOP

IN SPOTLIGHT Sen. Chuck Grassley, center has faced some criticism on how he has handled plans for letting a woman testify about her allegations that Judge Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school

A woman who has accused U.S. President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of sexual assault decades ago wants her allegations to be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation before she appears at a U.S. Senate hearing, her lawyers said on Tuesday.

Ms Ford's allegations, made in an article in the Washington Post on Sunday, have put Trump's Supreme Court in jeopardy, with Democrats urging for the appointment process to be delayed.

"What is happening with the Judiciary Committee, really, I would call it a railroad job", Sen.

Democrats contend that Republicans' refusal to let the FBI investigate suggests they are not interested in getting to the truth.

Ford has said Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when both were high school students in Maryland, an allegation Kavanaugh has called "completely false". Trump and Senate Republicans have been emphatic that an FBI renewal of its background checks on Kavanaugh won't happen, saying an investigation by committee staff - which Democrats are boycotting - is sufficient.

"Someone who is lying does not ask the FBI to investigate their claims", she said.

Back in 1991, however, the FBI did investigate sexual harassment claims against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said he had "a lot of questions" for Kavanaugh.

According to the New York Times, evangelical leaders are putting pressure on the GOP leadership, warning that religious conservatives may stay home and not vote in the midterm elections unless Senate Republicans do more to defend Kavanaugh and get him seated.

Senator Lindsey Graham said "it is imperative the Judiciary Committee move forward on the Kavanaugh nomination and a committee vote be taken as soon as possible".

Majority Republicans, haunted by the panel's 1991 treatment of Anita Hill during Justice Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearings, say the invitation to testify publicly on Monday stands.

Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, told MSNBC on Tuesday that the White House should request an FBI investigation of the sexual-assault accusation and any refusal to do so by Republicans would amount to rushing to confirm him.

Ford's attorneys said in the letter that they wanted an FBI investigation of the incident before she testifies in front of the committee in Washington. She was terrified, she said, that she would be in trouble if her parents realized she had been at a party where teenagers were drinking, and she anxious they might figure it out even if she did not tell them.

"If you have been assaulted or harassed by a powerful Republican man, you better not talk about it or you're going to pay a price", Murray said concerning Ford's situation.

"Look, if she shows up and makes a credible showing that'll be very interesting", Trump told reporters as he left the White House to survey flood damage in North Carolina.

Mr. Swalwell dismissed Ms. Collins's concerns on Twitter arguing it was nothing compared to threats sent to Judge Kavanaugh's accuser Christine Blasey Ford.

She also acknowledged being strongly opposed to Kavanaugh's nomination before Ford came forward.

"If she doesn't want to participate and tell her story, there's no reason for us to delay", Sen.

Clinton says that makes it hard to "avoid the appearance of insult" against Ford.

But Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said Wednesday he'd give Ford only until Friday to agree to testify.
