It had been a hard opening for United on the artificial pitch in Bern, with Young Boys looking menacing on the break, but everything changed when Pogba made a decision to take matters into his own hands, latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the opposition box and scooping an ingenious, left-footed finish into the top corner. Matt Busby, understandably, urged his board to accept and United entered the hat for the preliminary round where they were drawn to play Switzerland's "team of the Fifties", Young Boys.

"I am really happy to play for this club, one of best clubs in world, so for me it's really good to be part of this club".

United begin their European campaign on their hosts' synthetic pitch on Wednesday, and Mourinho referenced Swiss tennis great Roger Federer's ability to adapt to different playing surfaces as an example of how his team should rise above the conditions.

"Everybody knows he has a favourite surface, but he has also to win on other surfaces. He has a clinical situation, but apart from that we go with everything we have", Mourinho said.

Paul Pogba's future remains uncertain but his match-winning performance against Young Boys was a reminder that no player is more important to Manchester United...

"He has a chance to play", Mourinho said.

"We decide not to bring Antonio Valencia because his knee is not a knee that needs an artificial pitch at all, so we brought Luke Shaw back to the squad and to the team".

Full back Antonio Valencia, who is suffering from a persistent knee complaint, has been left in Manchester, with Luke Shaw set to start in his place.

Mourinho confirmed that Shaw would start at left-back after Saturday's 2-1 win at Watford - a match Marcus Rashford missed as he started a three-match ban.

The Manchester United midfielder then doubled his - and his team's - tally for the night with a cool penalty before Anthony Martial bagged a third. "They have shaped football at the highest level in recent years".

Mourinho, however, insists he will not use Young Boys' pitch as an excuse. In-form striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored a hat-trick against BSC Young Boys three years ago for Everton, will spearhead the attack for Manchester United.

"Try to be a little bit happy with the ones that are playing and not to be greedy with the ones that are not playing".
