LOS ANGELES - "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" won the top prizes at the Emmy awards on Monday on a night of upsets for the highest honors in television and a triumph for streaming services.

Amazon's sitcom about an unhappy housewife who performs standup comedy, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", took home both the crown for best comedy series, the best comedy actress for Rachel Brosnahan, as well as best supporting actress in a comedy for Alex Borstein.

The contenders for outstanding lead actress in a comedy are Pamela Adlon for "Better Things", Rachel Brosnahan for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", Allison Janney for "Mom", Issa Rae for "Insecure", Tracee Ellis Ross for "Black-ish" and Lily Tomlin for "Grace and Frankie".

This is the first series Emmy win for Amazon, which had had success with the series "Transparent" but ultimately lost out to the yearly dominance of HBO's "Veep" in the comedy category.

Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader scooped an award for Best Actor in the Comedy Series.

It was Foy's final chance to win an Emmy for her role as the Queen before she hands over to Olivia Colman for season three and she appeared visibly emotional on stage.

The ceremony hosted by "Saturday Night Live" regulars Colin Jost and Michael Che took on a decidedly political hue, with a barrage of edgy jokes on hot-button issues such as diversity in Hollywood, #MeToo and President Donald Trump.

It was the only award of the night to go to a broadcast network show, a reflection of how TV tastes have changed - and no doubt an omen for another historic ratings low for this awards show. We've learned that the hosts of an awards show should behave as if they're glad to be there and as if they care that the audience is glad to be there.
