Fort Trump? Trump considers permanent military base in Poland named after himself

Trump says U.S. considering permanent military presence in Poland

Andrzej Duda and Donald Trump meet at the White House.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said at the White House Tuesday that he would welcome a permanent United States military base in his country - and declared that he would name it "Fort Trump".

The two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies share security concerns in face of Russia's increased military activity and Poland is seeking a greater US troop presence on its territory.

"The President offered us much more than $2 billion", Trump said.

Poland seeks to become the "main ally" of the United States in Europe, according to Poland's Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, who described the prospects for a U.S. base on his country's soil as a "real possibility". He said he had assured Trump that a permanent US base in Poland would not result in a newly heightened military standoff with Russian Federation in central and Eastern Europe, because he said that was already happening. Trump says it's "ridiculous" and bad for the German people.

Duda's praise of Trump is in line with Warsaw's stance on mutual defense, which has stood apart from other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states in their sometimes contentious dealings with the US administration.

In May 2018, the Polish government offered to spend up to $2 billion to establish a permanent US military presence in Poland. "And I'm convinced that this cooperation between Poland and the United States will go on smoothly", Duda continued. "And we have the greatest strength in the world, especially now", Trump said. "I said that I would very much like for us to set up a permanent American base in Poland which we would call Fort Trump", Duda said through a translator.

"I think it's a very aggressive situation", Trump said. I think that Russian has acted aggressively. "But when we're defending immensely wealthy countries and they're not the paying for the defense to the United States, they're only taking advantage of us".

Trump, who looked annoyed at times by Duda's long answers, jumped in at one point to note that Poland has promised to pay "billions of dollars for a base".

Poland, which is a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation since 1999, has been taking a very active part in the recent military activities of the alliance, described as an attempt to counter "hostile" Russian moves. Last October, the USA sent a new mechanized brigade there. "I was smiling when I was talking to Mr President".
