Sign explodes from hurricane winds

A mother and her infant were killed when a tree fell on their house in Wilmington, North Carolina, the first reported fatalities from Hurricane Florence, police said Friday.

According to Duplin County Sherriff Blake Wallace, two of the deaths happened outside of Kenansville, while the third happened in Kornegay.

A 78-year-old man was reportedly trying to connect two extension cords outside in the rain.

The eyewall was onshore at the North Carolina coast as of 6am AST (11am BST), with landfall having now occurred.

One person died at the West Brunswick High School shelter Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson for Brunswick County.

New Bern Police Lt. David Daniels said early Friday morning that between 150 and 200 people had been rescued so far, with others still waiting for help.

Hurricane Florence has made landfall in North Carolina, forcing a life-threatening storm surge of floodwater inland and shredding structures in its path.

"And it's just a Category 1 hurricane", Tarr told Agence France-Presse.

It is expected to move across parts of southeastern North Carolina and eastern SC on Friday and Saturday, then head north over the western Carolinas and central Appalachian Mountains early next week, the NHC said. The Weather Channel estimated that up to three million customers might lose power in the Carolinas due to Florence. The Horry County Coroner's Office said that they were found in their home on Saturday afternoon, and died Friday night.

With the center of the storm still at sea early Friday, scores of residents had to be rescued from homes and the tops of cars in New Bern, North Carolina. A nuclear power plant in Brunswick, NC, has shut operations.

At least 780,000 customers were without power by Saturday afternoon, including N.C. Electric Cooperatives customers, and customers across Duke's territory in North and SC.

"Hurricane Florence is powerful, slow and relentless", he said. As the storm sat along the edge of the Atlantic, some stretches along the coastal Carolinas received close to 20 inches of rain.

"There is still time, but not a lot of time", said Derrec Becker of the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management. "Because we had gotten to a point where the weather was so bad, we were having to stack and strategize on those calls". With Florence, "we're looking at the same amount of rainfall in three days".

Southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern SC could see 20 to 30 inches of rainfall; some isolated areas could see 40 inches. Another 400 people were in shelters in Virginia, where forecasts were less dire.

For people living inland in the Carolinas, the moment of maximum peril from flash flooding could arrive days later, because it takes time for rainwater to drain into rivers and for those streams to crest.

Grounded: almost 1,200 flights cancelled.

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm and more than 1 million were ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia. She plans to continue to ride out the storm.

At the White House, President Donald Trump has been retweeting local emergency officials' updates and tips for surviving the storm.

Hurricane-force winds extended 70 miles (110 kilometers) from the center, and tropical storm-force winds reached out 195 miles (315 kilometers). "Catastrophic effects will be felt".

The Neuse, Pamlico, Pungo and Bay rivers may experience storm surges from 4 to 7 feet. The homes of about 10 million were under watches or warnings for the hurricane or tropical storm conditions. She died Friday morning. It's moving westward across the eastern Caribbean, where it's expected to bring up to 5 inches of rain across Puerto Rico.

In Brunswick County, Hurricane Florence was continuing to make its impacts felt Friday.
