Kipchoge smashes marathon world record in Berlin

While Kipchoge savored his victory and the new record time, Kipruto who was celebrating his 24th birthday held his own to come in for second while Kipsang who dropped out of the race previous year finished third.

Eliud Kipchoge, Kenya's 2016 Olympic gold medalist, set a world record in the marathon Sunday, becoming the first person to finish a marathon in less than two hours and two minutes and lowering the event's best mark by 78 seconds in Berlin.

In the German capital on Sunday, Kipchoge had just a handful of pacemakers for company from the early stages of the race.

Fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto had held the previous record since 2014, 2:02.57, also set in the Berlin marathon.

It was up to Kipchoge to run the final 17 kilometers alone and maintain the cushion of time that he built up to get under the world record.

Kenya completed their podium sweep with Amos Kipruto in second place more than five minutes later and Kipsang, a former world record holder back in 2013, in third.

He missed the mythical mark by just 25 seconds.

"I lack the words to describe how I feel", said Kipchoge, whose winning margin over Amos Kipruto in second place was nearly five minutes.

The leading duo went through 25km in 1:12:24, and as Kipsang continued to fade in the second group, Kipchoge left Boit, who dropped out of the race.

With good weather on the right course, there was little doubt after Monza that Kipchoge would soon seal his legacy by owning the world record.

"My target was to break the course record and run under 2:19:00 time". As he he's done in his other major victories, Kipchoge smiled through any signs of pain by the time he hit 40K in 1:55:32.

"It was hard", Kipchoge said.

His split of 14:21 between the 25km and 30km mark was the fastest ever recorded in a Marathon, breaking his own previous mark set at the London Marathon in 2016 where he came close to breaking the record having covered the same distance in 1:27:13.
