2019 Lexus ES with Digital Outer Mirror tech

Lexus will start offering Digital Outer Mirrors, and the first vehicle to get it will be the new ES saloon.

The Yomiuri ShimbunToyota Motor Corp. has announced that it would install digital outer mirrors in place of sideview mirrors in its Lexus brand's new ES model to be released in late October.

The cameras will only be available in Japan initially, and only on the new ES 300h Version L, but Lexus will determine whether to bring them to the USA after reviewing the feedback from buyers.

There are other benefits too, including the cameras being able to resist the buildup of raindrops or snow thanks to their design, and better visibility in all conditions.

The cameras transmit their images onto five-inch displays positioned inside the cabin at the base of the A-pillars.

Here in the USA, the technology has yet to be made legal, though vehicles are already being sold with video screens that replace the center rearview mirror. At this time, the Digital Outer Mirrors will only be available in Japan.

The system automatically enhances the corresponding area―left, right or behind―when the turn signals are activated, or when the transmission is put into reverse. On the serious side of things though, by swapping traditional bulky side mirrors for something much smaller means less drag is created, which ultimately leads to improved fuel economy. It's already expensive enough to replace broken vehicle mirrors, and we don't want to begin thinking about the cost of a whole new camera system.
