Luis Enrique admits mistake over Aspas call-up

Croatia celebrate scoring in a friendly against Portugal last week

Luis Enrique took charge after the humiliating exit to Russian Federation at the World Cup had left Spain doubting the possession game that won them three consecutive major tournaments between 2008 and 2012.

Spain's Sergio Ramos celebrates after scoring the fifth goal against Croatia during the Uefa Nations League, September 11, 2018.

"That's why we want to win every match, but we are playing against a Spain team which didn't meet their expectations at the World Cup and are highly motivated now".

Spain coach Luis Enrique said he made a mistake by not initially calling up Iago Aspas for the UEFA Nations League fixtures against England and Croatia.

The result is their heaviest ever defeat, the first time they have conceded six goals and the first game in which they have let in five since a 5-1 loss to England in 2009.

Croatia's Ivan Santini was guilty of missing early on but once Spain pulled ahead, the visitors crumbled.

Croatia drew 1-1 with Portugal on Thursday night in their first game since losing to France in the final in Russian Federation, while Spain will be on home soil under new boss Luis Enrique for the first time following his appointment. "We've played two teams that went very far in the World Cup and these victories are very important to reach the final phase, which is a challenge we have set ourselves", added Asensio.

Zlatko Dalic cut a furious figure on the touchline, and his mood darkened just four minutes after the restart, when Rodrigo beat the offside trap to latch onto a pass from Asensio and slot between Kalinic's legs.

"They belong to the Spanish national team, nothing more".

Marco Asensio was on a mad one last night versus Croatia.

Isco capped Spain's offensive show with a right-footed shot from the center of the box in the 70th minute. "After the second goal, the match was over for us".

In June, Asensio actually commented directly on interest from Liverpool, saying: "When the World Cup is over, we'll talk about that sort of thing, now I'm focused on selection [for Spain]".
