Osaka claims U.S. Open title after Serena controversy

Serena Williams and Anastasija Sevastova shake hands at the end of their semi-final

In incredible scenes at Flushing Meadows on Saturday, Williams, aiming to equal Court's record of grand slam triumphs, received a series of code violations en route to a 6-2 6-4 defeat to her 20-year-old opponent.

At 1-0 in the second, the chair umpire, Carlos Ramos, issued a warning to Williams and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou who was believed to be signaling to Williams. When she realised that the next game had started with Osaka ahead 15-love, Williams told Ramos he should have retracted the initial warning for coaching.

"I have never cheated in my life", she said.

Earlier, as Williams pleaded her case on court with tournament referee Brian Earley, calling the penalties unfair, she said: "Because you're a woman, you're going to take this away from me?" She then yelled at the umpire and demanded an apology for the previous violation.

She was mostly dominant, dropping only one set in her seven matches, and she saved 5 of 6 break points against Williams after erasing all 13 in the semifinals against Madison Keys. "I know you guys were here rooting and I was rooting too but let's make this the best moment we can and we'll get through it. Let's give everyone the credit where credit is due". This is not fair. That, in turn, led to Williams calling Ramos a "thief", which escalated into an unprecedented move for such a prestigious match, with Ramos docking a Williams a full game as a penalty.

Although Williams' feud with Ramos appeared to overshadow Osaka's historic 6-2 6-4 victory, the two women shared an emotional moment together when Williams hugged Osaka, who considers Williams - the victor of 23 Grand Slam singles titles - her childhood idol. "I'd rather lose", she told Ramos.

Serena stormed up to his chair and informed him that she would never deliberately receive guidance from Mouratoglou, who was sat in the players' box.

"But I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have (equality)".

"How dare you insinuate that I was cheating?"

"Congratulations Naomi", said Williams, who later said Osaka played an "amazing" match.

Though she seemed dead in the water and probably was not coming back, Williams got penalized a point and then a game by Ramos.

Williams put her arm around Osaka's shoulder.

"At the same time I feel like even though I should enjoy this moment, I should still think of it as another match".

This wasn't the first outburst Williams had at the U.S. Open. "Maybe in a few days I'll realize what I've done", said Osaka, adding that the noise was so great in Arthur Ashe Stadium and her focus so single-minded that she wasn't fully aware of the escalating controversy.

But Osaka was somehow able to keep her composure and she closed out the victory with Williams still unable to gather herself. Osaka is trying to win Japan's first Grand Slam singles title. Should they be allowed have an influence on the result of a match?
