GoFundMe says they will give Johnny Bobbitt $400,000

Search warrant carried out at home of New Jersey couple accused of misusing money raised for homeless man

Authorities searched the home of Mark D'Amico and Katelyn McClure in Florence early Thursday morning. Authorities towed a BMW off of the property and removed boxes presumed to contain evidence.

So it's come to this: Last week, Johnny Bobbitt filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey couple, alleging that they withheld most of the money and spent it on vacations, gambling and a luxury vehicle.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office confirmed Thursday that officials with the prosecutor's office and the Florence Township Police Department conducted the search warrant "in connection with a criminal investigation into the Johnny Bobbitt matter".

But Bobbit has filed a lawsuit against the couple, alleging that they engaged in fraud and had misspent the funds. The now-deleted campaign ultimately raised just over $US400,000, and the couple made numerous TV appearances saying that Bobbitt's life would be changed forever. According to Bobbitt, McClure and D'Amico squandered the money on gambling, vacations, and a new vehicle. He added that no charges were filed but "further updates will be provided as circumstances warrant".

The highly-publicized fundraiser was started by McClure last year after Bobbitt, a 34-year-old former Marine, gave his last $20 to her when she ran out of gas on I-95 outside of Philadelphia. Share this article with your family and friends to tell them the good news!

He claims he only received $75,000.

Mark D'Amico and Kate McClure speak with host Megyn Kelly on Megyn Kelly Today, last month in NY. He indicated in court this week that his clients intend to claim their right not to testify, but Dow said she needed to hear from them in person.

Meantime, Bobby Whithorne, director of North America Communications for GoFundMe, said that Bobbitt will receive the funds. The couple were ordered to turn over the funds to Bobbitt last week, but it never happened.

The couple told The Philadelphia Inquirer they gave Bobbitt some of the money but were withholding the rest until he got a job and was drug-free.

There are conflicting reports from the couple and Bobbitt about how the money was used and whether Bobbitt was a participant or a victim.

A spokesman for GoFundMe said the site is also working with police in New Jersey to make sure the homeless man receives all the money raised for him.

I was thinking about this story yesterday while taking care of some chores around the house and it struck me that the tale of Johnny Bobbitt and Katie McClure is becoming more and more like The Truman Show. He no longer has the camper or SUV, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday.

In court on Wednesday, the couple's lawyer Ernest Badway said Mr Bobbitt has received about A$278,000. "GoFundMe's goal has always been to ensure Johnny gets support he deserves", said the statement. D'Amico told the newspaper he had indeed used $US500 from the bank account to gamble on a night when he forgot his Sugarhouse Casino card but had "quickly repaid" the money with his winnings. The campaign raised $400,000, which was meant to assist Bobbitt, who also struggles with drug use.

The company said it also gave $20,000 to an account set up by his attorney to help him during the investigation.
