Obama Denounced President Trump in Speech, Warns of 'Pivotal Moment'

Returning to a familiar theme of speeches in his presidency, Obama said at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign that the price of progress toward "our founding ideals" sometimes meant taking two steps back for every step forward.

Trump also claimed, as he has in the past, that economic indicators were bad under Obama but excellent during his own presidency.

The former commander-in-chief urged Americans to vote, saying "democracy depended on it" in this particularly challenging time in the country's history.

Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens said in a statement that more Obama wouldn't help the Democrats. "But right now there's nothing". "The stakes really are higher".

"We thought it was important to find a setting where he can find a cogent, rational argument outside of the more chaotic campaign appearances that come this fall", the adviser said.

But he dropped that political tradition in IL, the state where he launched his own political career, saying a vote against Republicans could restore "honesty and decency and lawfulness" to government.

The former president's remarks in IL came ahead of a series of campaign stops to help fellow Democrats running in the November midterm elections. "And when people stop showing up, like in 2010 and 2014 where fewer people voted, a vacuum forms, and a politics of fear and resentment fills that void". Obama said. "Its central organizing principle in foreign policy was the fight against communism and now they are cozying up to the former head of the KGB, actively blocking legislation that would defend our elections from Russian Federation attack".

On Friday, President Donald Trump spoke at a campaign event in North Dakota.

"Demagogues promise simple fixes for big problems", Obama said, swiping at Trump.

Mr Obama reminded the audience that the economic recovery began during his administration and defended his handling of the 2008 economic collapse.

If Democrats win control of one or both chambers in Congress in November, they would be able not just to stymie Mr Trump's agenda but to launch investigations into the Trump administration. President Trump has warned his supporters that if they don't turn up to the voting booth, he could be impeached.

"If it does happen, it's your fault, because you didn't go out to vote".

Now, as 2018 midterm campaign season gets underway, it's likely a very public Trump-versus-Obama showdown becomes a defining storyline of the year.

The one-time community organizer used his notable gift of oration and implored students to get out and vote, setting up the election as a defining moment for the direction of the country.

Next Thursday, Obama leads a rally in Cleveland for Ohio governor candidate Richard Cordray and other Ohio Democrats.
