"It was over and above what he's done before", Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC told reporters recently.

Justice Department spokesman Devin O'Malley says Attorney General Jeff Session will meet with a number of state attorneys general later this month to discuss the department's concerns.

"Only in -- in North Korea the leader may say you may prosecute this person not this person".

No exaggeration: if any other elected leader in a Western democracy tried to instruct their top law enforcement official to shield their political allies from prosecution for political reasons like this, they would be forced to resign within hours.

The president cited what he called "Obama era investigations" just before midterm elections and that "two easy wins now in doubt". He is doing so potentially because those two members of Congress were the first two members of Congress to support Trump's presidential bid but definitely because the indictments jeopardize his party's chances in the fall election.

Both have proclaimed their innocence.

AshLee Strong, a spokesperson for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, responded to Trump's tweet by saying the Justice Department "should always remain apolitical, and the speaker has demonstrated he takes these charges seriously". Ryan has removed Collins and Hunter from their committee assignments. Mueller is now leading the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Collins was accused in a 30-page indictment of tipping off his son - while attending the picnic - about the results of a failed drug trial that was about to crash the stock price of an Australian biotech company. While Hunter plans to run for re-election, Collins is stepping down. Trump did not have any public events Monday.

But after taking a look around - and possibly noting the swamp-like heat and humidity engulfing the capital - he strolled back inside the White House at 10:42.

Trump angrily banged out second message several minutes that shifted to all caps at one point and further harangued Sessions by name.

He was hardly the only one calling for Sessions' head for his alleged failure to protect Trump due to the attorney general's recusal from the Russian Federation probe.

The statement comes a week after US President Donald Trump accused Google of an anti-conservative bias, and raised the prospect of antitrust issues involving Facebook, Google and Amazon.

Mr Session said he "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations" in August, hours after Mr Trump had critcised him in a interview on Fox News.

FILE - Attorney General Jeff Sessions reads from a statute about his recusal while testifying on Capitol Hill in Washington, June 13, 2017, before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.

Some Republican lawmakers - like Senator Lindsey Graham, for instance - have indicated that President Trump could fire and replace Sessions after this fall's midterms.
