Ronaldo Modric and Salah nominated for FIFA gong as Messi misses out

Asked about who he thinks should win FIFA's The Best, which is between Ronaldo, Salah and Modric, he responded: "I would give it to our player, Modric, I'm clear about that".

He was runner-up in 2007 and 2008 before winning the title for the first of five years in 2009.

Messi and Ronaldo have contested one of the great sporting rivalries over the course of the last decade, competing for individual and team honours while playing for arch-rivals Barcelona and Madrid.

Yet, that might not even be enough for the Portuguese to edge ahead in his battle for supremacy with Messi by adding his sixth crown when the winners are announced on September 24.

Zidane himself is up for an award and has been nominated alongside France boss Didier Deschamps and Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic in the Best Men's Coach final three.

"In a year that was filled with drama, action and excitement across both the men's and women's game, The Best FIFA Football Awards 2018 look set to build on the success of 2017's event and return to London bigger and better than ever".

Cristiano Ronaldo is in the top 10 thanks to his overhead kick against Juventus for former club Real Madrid.

Modric helped Croatia to the World Cup final, won by France, while Salah's goals propelled Liverpool to the Champions League final.

Cristiano Ronaldo is locked in a race to be crowned Federation Internationale de Football Association men's world player, alongside former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric and Egypt's Mohamed Salah.

The main thought behind wanting Messi to be recognised was not just the fact that he had another stellar campaign individually (45 goals in 54 games), but that Barcelona won three trophies (La Liga, Copa Del Rey and the Spanish Supercup). Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah are also in contention.
