Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councilor who ran as a progressive activist, ousted 10-term Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano Tuesday in a Massachusetts House primary.

An emotional video of her finding out she had won has been shared thousands of times online.

In a speech after her win, Ms Pressley said: "Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us". She solidly defeated Michael Capuano despite his long progressive record, including voting against the Iraq War and supporting Medicare for all.

Capuano was considered one of the most liberal members of the MA delegation, and Pressley had acknowledged she had few major policy quarrels with him.

There is no Republican challenger in the November general election.

Capuano is only the second Democrat to lose a primary this midterm season, the first was New York Rep. Joe Crowley, who lost to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that MA will be well-served", Capuano said when he conceded the election before the race was officially called on Tuesday night.

A 10-term incumbent congressman in MA conceded to a progressive candidate during the state's Democratic primaries Tuesday night. Joe Crowley in NY in June, appeared at a fundraiser with Pressley.

She also referred to President Donald Trump as "a racist, misogynist, truly empathy bankrupt man" and hit out at wealth inequality in her seventh congressional district.

"Clearly the district wanted a lot of change", Mr Capuano told supporters on Tuesday as he conceded. And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in USA history.

Pressley has served on Boston's city council since 2009, with a mandate to support women and girls.

However, unlike Crowley, Capuano had fiercely contested the MA race by racking up endorsements, attending debates and highlighting his consistently liberal voting record in one of the most Democratic districts in a traditionally Democratic state.

Pressley is likely to become the first black woman elected to Congress from MA in November, since there are no Republican candidates in the race. Other progressive candidates, including Cimbrelo, ha hoped to pull a Ocasio-Cortez-style upset Tuesday night.

Another Democrat, U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, is retiring at the end of this term, and that open seat touched off a political scramble with 10 candidates on the Democratic primary ballot. Pressley, though, was already a well-known figure in MA politics, and the race was seen as close and competitive for months. "People of every walk of life".
