Sanders reportedly stared at him as he refused to answer whether he thought McCain would have been a better president than Barack Obama, who defeated McCain in the 2008 election.

Senator John McCain was honored in his home state of Arizona Thursday where former Vice President Joe Biden delivered the eulogy. McCain was a six-term senator from Arizona, a former Republican nominee for president, and a Navy pilot who served in Vietnam where he endured five-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war.

McCain's daughter Sidney and his son Jimmy will also speak during the service Saturday, along with his longtime Senate allies Lindsey Graham, Joe Lieberman, and Kelly Ayotte.

In a posthumous letter published on Monday, Mr McCain seemed to make a veiled comment on Mr Trump's policies. McCain, a naval aviator, was shot down during the Vietnam War and spent 5 1/2 years as a POW.

Trump repeated those remarks during his 2016 campaign.

During an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday, Mr Trump said he was not willing to compromise with Canada on revising NAFTA. "I firmly believe Mr Trump's policies, both domestic and global, are causing major problems in the world especially around equality and immigration", he said.

Asked if he missed an opportunity to unite the country and made a mistake, Trump disagreed.

He urged the people of Ireland to "show their disgust and rejection of the Trump administration's policies by turning out, as we did during the Iraq war in 2003, in large-scale mass protest around the country". "I have made mistakes, but I hope my love for America will be weighed favorably against them", he wrote.
